A Woman
For generations and generations there has been conflict over the duties of women. Since the beginning of time society and the media has portrayed women as passive individuals. In today’s society not much has changed there are plenty of people (men and women), who feel a woman’s place is in the home. This is just one of the many value assumptions that people think women duties are. For many years, I considered my home to be a very liberal one. Coming from a single parent home I thought my mother, who raised me to be a strong individual, was an open-minded individual herself. However, I was wrong. As I grew older my views and values, although somewhat similar to those of my mother’s, somehow were different. My mother, ever since I can remember has always worked and provided a decent home for my sister and I. She has always taught us to be independent and never depend on anyone, so you can imagine I was surprised when she stated in the same breathe that as a woma . . .
A woman is a strong, powerful, and intelligent individual. ” After a long debate on what a woman can do, she declared that only a gay woman works in a man’s field. What exactly is a man’s field and how does a career choice determine a person’s sexuality? Now, while pondering over my mother’s feelings and ideas I realized that even though she taught me to go for what I want, that she unconsciously believed assumptions of women and their duties because of what she was taught. If I were to assume anything, I would assume that if women have duties, they are of being vibrant, loving people. n I am suppose to take care of my man. So you can imagine my mother’s opinion, when I stated to her that my desire is to learn to become an auto body mechanic. She stated with intense passion that women are not supposed to work in those types of fields. She is also diverse and complex, and these are some of the qualities we should embrace. Being a woman is a beautiful thing and we shouldn’t try to limit the things women can do. Someone I thought I knew I didn’t know at all. My mother assumes that a woman is supposed to serve her man and the man controls everything in the home. For example, many feel if a woman decides to work outside the home, her chosen profession should be that of a secretary. I believe that a woman can do anything a man can do and that only she can make the decision of where she wants to be. While we know these assumptions are absurd, there are many more absurd assumptions.
