College

I moved to Hong Kong when I entered fourth grade. I was ten, and too young to appreciate its customs and culture. However, I did learn to imitate a British accent and speak enough Cantonese to get around. Surprisingly, my love for basketball was the most valuable part of my overseas experience. Because I took the initiative and joined in that game, I overcame cultural boundaries and learned a sport that became integral to my life. I made this commitment because I enjoy every aspect of the game. While all my friends are at the movies or on a shopping spree at the mall, I can usually be found running laps around the school gym. I decided to join them and soon discovered over a game of ball that even though we all came from different cultures, races and religions, we were able to communicate through sport. Playing basketball is what relieves me from my worries. At no point during the game do I think about homework assignments or any craziness going on in my life. I was thrilled to make the school basketball team when I returned to New York. Similar to Hong Kong, basketball continued to help me interact with kids I would not have otherwise. Hong Kong and basketball taught me commitment, determination and sacrifice is key to success. Thrown into a new environment, I learned to communicate and form friendships in a culturally diverse atmosphere. To follow through on my obligation, I have made the difficult decision to sacrifice my social life. Hong Kong gave me an early start to develop skills needed to deal with challenging situations. When I'm on the court it's just me and the ball. Being part of the team has also taught me serious dedication.
