A New Take

             For years, there has been a standard for to which all college-bound students must adhere. Each individual must complete the ACT or SAT in order to begin his or her college career. Debates have surfaced on this already three-hour entrance exam. The controversy is over its fairness, reliability and impact on racial diversity on campus. There is also the issue of what exactly do standardized tests measure and does it correlate with I.Q.? With a new politically correct universe, the substitution of test scores for a more diversely rounded campus might be in the near future.
             In order to amplify the principle of standardized tests, a new section has been proposed. It will consist of a writing sample on the following phrases: There has always been great passion to bring about change or there has always been great passion to keep things the same. Pupils will be required to support one of the statements from a science, art, music and historic point of view, as well as from their own personal experience. Claude Steele's research further proved the need for an added section on standardized tests. His research focused on how good students do poorly on test results because they suffer from negative stereotypes about their abilities. This portion will provide admissions offices with a writing sample that will, hopefully, more accurately gauge prospective students.
             Soaring advancements in technology are a constant in a computer-generated world. Medical milestones are set almost daily to keep up with the rising life expectancy. These technology veterans can now complete tasks that were once time-consuming or dangerous for people. Computers, which use to require a degree to operate, are now being used in preschool classrooms. Many people can be seen with remnants of once large bulky tabletop editions in their pockets and purses. The possibilities are endless.
