Merchants in the feudal world traded mostly locally in their community. These merchants did not trade with money. They used the bartering system, which means they exchanged things for things . Before becoming a member of a guild one had to began as an apprentice, which usually lasted seven to fourteen years. Many of the upper guilds worked with the medieval leaders to create laws. These guilds were associations of masters in a trade. The bishops town and the merchants town would eventually merge and become walled in. Burgs attracted merchants because of their defense, ability to protect stores of grain and water, and a lord could provide justice . The second most important industry was the production of metal goods, which were used to make, armor, tools, and weapons. The moneychangers were basically bankers who changed foreign currency into the local currency. Other cities formed around fortified castles. These men were called artisans and usually sold their products in their own workshops. Many landowners moved to town and some peasants where able to escape serfdom to live in towns. The blacksmiths of the feudal world usually only limited themselves to making farming tools. With so much commercial expansion, much conflict came about that helped spark competition and work within the guilds. Moneychangers were flourishing from the trade and flow of money in Europe. The traveling merchants helped the flow of money by traveling from place to place exchanging coins.
