A Simple Hello Makes a Difference

             I have always felt sympathy and compassion for senior citizens that I have met at resting homes. I feel for the people who sit alone without any family, but I never did anything about it. I guess I figured someone else would. I did not take the time to really think about the depth of their pain. Then I thought the day I was visiting my Aunt Olga at the Hospice, what if I did take a moment out of my busy schedule to simply say hello to someone that has no family or stop and chat with someone eating alone. And I did.I spent day in and day out visiting with Aunt. While I was visiting for several hours I would stop in each room and chat with the men and women. I helped the Hospice each day with bringing wheel chairs down to the events that were held. One night I danced and sung for a group of women. This activity took place in a room right near my aunt. My aunt was unable to move from the bed but she heard me and she was ecstatic. She had a smile that sparkled from ear to ear and was proud that I was helping other sick people enjoy there last months of life. My goal was to make them happy and have fun. During this time I met a very wonderful women named Helen. She was very old and blind. Helen was ornery the majority of the time, but I felt I had a special bond with her. I sat with her every other day and talked to her. One day I brought her chocolate chip cookies and she loved them. Helen made me laugh. She had a million smiles. She had a sneaky, devious smile. She had a cute smile and she also had a blissful smile that made me smile whenever I was blue. It was a unique smile that nobody could beat. When she was mad or hurting or thinking or listening her face was stone. When she smiled though I felt I was looking right into her soul. This is the reason why I couldn't help myself to chitchat with most the senior citizens in this hospice. There could never be a better feeling then to make someone's life full of joyfu...
