Unjust World
The world that was depicted through the eight stories, and two song lyrics that were read in class, was a very unjust world. For starters, there are countless examples of discrimination against those of lower social standings. The poor, or less fortunate, people are, in most cases, treated more like animals than human beings. Also, the people in these stories show a lack of priorities, and morals. They make poor decisions, and, for the most part, do not even realize the decisions were immoral. In addition, the people who are not making these bad choices are suffering, or experiencing hardships, most of which are not deserved. Taken as a whole, the world revealed through these selections is one of discrimination, poor judgment, and many hardships. First of all, there were many occurrences of bigotry against those less fortunate. On the other hand, there were a few occasions when those of lower standings were treated fairly, as was the case in the story "The Guest". Daru treated the Arab more than fair; he treated him as an equal. But for the most part, prejudice was a prominent feature of the characters in the stories. One example would be in the story "The Heavenly Christmas Tree". The little boy in this s
It was a damask drum, and she could not have heard it. The issue of ethics was definitely approached in these stories, and I found them to be very dishonorable. When he found a nice house with other little kids and lots of nice food on the table, he tried to get inside unnoticed, but was very quickly yelled at and pushed out. " This line, taken from the Beatles song "All the Lonely People", gives an image of the Priest casually walking from a grave of a person who belonged to the church. He could not even bend his fingers enough to pick up a coin. Upon finding this, the gardener killed himself. In "Forty-Five a Month" the little girl was so excited to go to the cinema with her dad that she left school early, and got very dressed up. The man selling shoelaces was treated as something less than human by two of the women in the apartment. "Come Dance With Me In Ireland" is another good example of the characteristic previously described. He did nothing wrong, but he still suffered. He is not depicted as being sad, but more disappointed because he did not save anyone. " Also, in "The Heavenly Christmas Tree" the little boy was so pure and innocent, yet he still suffered immensely. He was at war fighting for the good of his country, but he came down with beriberi. Also, the morals and priorities in this literary world were completely ignored; people made poor decisions, and hurt others, and themselves in the process.
