Oedipus vs Willy loman

Oedipus is a strong a man with great confidence that is blind to the truth even though it clearly right in front of him. He is oblivious to the truth and cannot bring himself to realize and face the reality that fate has set. Even though the oracles declare that it is him who killed the king and married his mother he still believes it to be untrue. Oedipus sternly believes he did not kill the king, even though the odds are greatly against him, and decides to unravel the truth on his own. He doesn’t realize the coincidences that exist in his life. He was told he would kill his father and does not question who his father is and coincidentally marries a woman old enough to be his mother. His mother is also blind to the truth since she fails to rec

. . .

All along Oedipus failed to accept that fate was destined and will happen no matter what actions a person takes. I believe Oedipus is a stronger character that exhibits confidence and belief in him since he so desperately wants to prove the oracles wrong. Both characters dealt with the realization of the truth in their own ways. After realization finally sets in, he cannot live with the truth and pokes his eyes out as a symbolism of his blindness to the world. He was a man with great self-confidence and believed he could unravel and solve any problem but he failed to see the tragedy right before his eyes. Oedipus will finally succumb to his fate and realize that he could not prevent destiny from taking its toll. After Oedipus realizes his fate, he does not commit suicide as Willy Loman did, but instead he goes on with his life and takes responsibility for his actions and fate. Sometimes in life what you believe to be true is not true and it is good to take a step back and think about your life and the choices you make and the consequences they will bring.

After analyzing these two tragic characters, I have chosen to be like Oedipus instead of Willy Loman. On the other hand, Willy Loman is a weak man who cannot live with his destiny since it is to overwhelming for him to deal with. At the end, he finally accepted his fate and with courage went on with his life and will take on whatever the future has to offer. According to Willy Loman, he only has one way out to change his destiny and that is by taking his own life in hopes of securing the lives of his family hopefully bring them success and closer in attaining the American Dream.

Oedipus and Willy Loman both faced tragedies that they desperately tried to hide and ignore but at the end their fate revealed their true destinies.
