The Great Mistakes of Sin found in Miller

The Bible says, ”The consequences of sin is death.” Nathaniel Hawthrorne portrays a chain of sequenced events that happen because of sin his characters commit. In the 1600’s, Boston, Massachusetts is filled with the religious group the Puritans who were “the most intolerant brood that ever lived”(64). The Puritans believed in every word of the Bible, and they were intolerant to deal with open sin. The young, beautiful Hester Prynne makes the mistake of adultery that would change her life. Arthur Dimmesdale, a well-honored minister of Boston, let his sin with Hester slowly degrade his life until the point of his death. An elderly man, named Roger Chillingsworth, feeds on Hester’s sin that would eventually lead to Arthur’s downfall. The inevitable effects of sin forever change Hester Prynne, Arthur Dimmesdale, and Roger Chillingsworth.

Hester’s baby incarcerates her to care for this child and being held with little esteem by the Puritans. Hester proves that one moment can lead to years of differences and sometimes nothing can make them better. After years of hard work, Hester raises Pearl, and the Puritans finally recognize Hester as part of the society no longer alienated from the rest of the people.

Arthur Dimmesdale hides his sin that he made with Hester from the public, which deteriorates his inner self. However, in the process of helping the minister, his actions are bringing the minister down. Arthur remains a well-honored man in Boston despite the internal conflict that he is fighting. The people of Boston respected him as, “the mouth- piece of Heaven’s messages of wisdom, and rebuke, and love. Arthur’s reconciliation with Hester gives him hope and confusion about his future. The effects of Dimmesndale’s sin did not come out immediately, but it was years later that they showed up at his death. Roger transforms in to a dark, evil character that has the only objective to hinder and frustrate Arthur. Roger senses something in the Minister Dimmesdale, and he tears down Arthur to the point of destruction. ”(98) The supposedly doctor Roger Chillingsworth ironically weakens Arthur’s life. Chillingsworth’s medicine helps the minister, but the internal conflicts that Roger brings to Arthur actually make him worse. After giving his Election Day sermon, Arthur cannot withhold his hidden sin and confesses his sin to Boston with the last bit of strength he has left in him. Through hard and having an optimistic attitude, Hester slowly removes herself from some of the consequences of her sin.
