Possible Dangers of Legalizing Medical Marijuana

If you are a hopeless patient and fighting severe pain due to illness, you would probably favor using marijuana for pain relief. Legalizing the medical marijuana is one of the most controversial issues in today's society. Marijuana or cannabis is widely used around the world. It causes hallucinations, disorientations and feelings of exhilaration, and thereby reduces anxiety. Those who are in favor of legalization, however, argue that the current drug laws do more harm than good. In my opinion, legalizing marijuana causes even more serious problems- drug addiction, and other various physical and psychological problems.First, beyond Prohibition group who are in favor of marijuana legalization says, "Making pot legal and levying hefty taxes would benefit national economy" (O'Brian, A., 2004). However, legalizing marijuana will cause even more serious problem. The treatment using marijuana is like endless war. The medicine has to be prescribed by a physician and the process of getting the approval is long. Marijuana is not effective for the treatment. It only relieves the pain for a few hours at a time and does not help in any way in treating the illness. Marijuana is addictive. It eventually leads patients to use even mor

In the long term, it may destroy the patient's important body cells one by one and as a result, physical problems such as paralysis occur. The hard scientific data about these facts supports that it is damaging to the brain, to motor skills, as well as to the heart and the nervous system. However, it can be easily argued that the benefits of not using it outweigh the harm because patients have to go through greater emotional shock after the drug effect ends. The marijuana user is more likely to become a victim. Strong measures to stop it will help in preventing increasing number of drug use. In conclusion, legalizing medical marijuana is continually increasing and leads to many other problems. Thomas Klein, professor of medical microbiology and immunology at the University of South Florida (CanWest News Service, March 08, 2004). Arresting people for smoking marijuana prevents police officers from arresting robbers and murderers. But when we consider the increased risk of having other serious diseases due to drug usage similar to an increased risk of cancers among children born to smokers of marijuana during their pregnancy, it is a dangerous substance. Although it relieves joint pain and relax muscles in many other illnesses, it can cause physical problems. When the prohibition ended, the consumption of alcohol soared by 350 percent (Bennet, 1989). S administration's goal is to reduce drug use of teenagers and adults by 10 percent in the next two years, and 25 percent in five years: "President Bush has committed $1. 6 billion in federal resources over the next five years for treatment and is asking for $3. On the other hand, with less usage of marijuana, addicts do not get the satisfaction of higher usage.
