Death of A Salesman
There are many different kinds of people living in our society today. When looking at someone who seems to have no concept of what is going on around them, a person cannot help but sympathize for them. It is hard to tell weather these people are thriving for attention or are unfortunately mentally unstable. It is sad to see a person with so much potential never learn how to use it. This occurs in "Death Of A Salesman", by Arthur Miller. Willy Loman was a man withhigh hopes and dreams for his children as well as himself. However, these dreams caused him many problems throughout his life, that in the end drove him to his death. Willy never seemed to have much direction in his life. He never became that big salesman that he had considered himself to be. Many people including Biff believed that Willy had the "wrong dreams" all his life and that caused him to ruin the Loman family. However, Charley agrees that "nobody dost blame this man." I agree with Biff and believe that it was Willy's fault because, he himself never even knew who he was. Biff was the only one who really understood his father and that being a salesman was not really what he was cut out to be. Willy had many other opportunities
Willy did however, encourage his kids but at the same time he acted more as a friend to them rather then a father figure. He refused to take these jobs because during this day and age everyone wanted to live the "American Dream", which was to have a family who respected you , to be a well-liked salesman and to own a home and an automobile. It turned out that he was a very selfish, foolish man who had many self beliefs that drove him to become insane, which caused him to take his own life. However, when this lady demands stockings from Willy, this is when Biff finally realizes that his father had been a fake his whole life. Willy defended himself by saying that he was very lonely, which is a poor excuse for what he did. I believe that it was not a flaw in the play because it led us to finally realizewhat kind of a man Willy really was. In the Loman household it seemed as if the lies never stopped. to make money and was offered several jobs by his brother Ben and his friend Charley. He never could figure out why he was going insane, but I feel that in the back of his head he knew it was his fault all along for the destruction of hisfamily and that is why he was experiencing all those mental breakdowns. Biff was continuously put on a pedestal by his Willy. When times got rough and Willy could no longer pay his own bills,he secretly went to Charley to borrow money for his incomeand lied to Linda about not being able to pay his incomeor make any sale appointments. All he put into Biff's conscious was that he was going to graduate high school and achieve a scholarship to a football college. While growing up Willy's family thought the world of him, especially his oldest son Biff. When these dreams failed and Biff went to Boston to visit Willy was when he finally realized that his father was a fake and had been putting his own dreams into Biff's head, and that is not what he wanted for his future.
