Billboards: Traditional Advertisement in America

             Long before advertisements could be broadcasted through televisions in the comfort of your own home, many years before advertisements could be made through a tune or jingle on the radio, advertising was and is still done today through the words and pictures on a billboard. The history of billboards has been traced all the way back to cave drawings in the city of Jeffers, Minnesota (Hull 56). This particular cave drawing was actually intended to be a warning sign rather than an advertising sign. It cautioned other cave dwellers that they should be aware of falling rocks in the path ahead. Billboard advertisements such as that are very helpful because it enables others to be aware of a danger or any other issue. Other billboards can be outrageous and inappropriate. These types of billboards promote danger, dangerous substances, or hatred indirectly, instead of warning people about it. In this case it is right to censor a billboard, but billboards are an essential part in the advertising of products, organizations, and statements in American society, and should not be prohibited in the United States.
             Billboards are a necessity for small companies that want to advertise their products to the people at a low price. Billboards are generally cheaper than television, and much more effective than radio (Fla 3). This makes them an ideal way of advertising. Most advertisements that are viewed on a billboard are primarily meant to stand out, but a few have secondary hidden meanings that might not be noticed until after viewing the billboard a certain way and a certain number of times. These hidden meanings are becoming a huge issue, because the meaning is not always appropriate for children or even adults. Products such as alcohol and tobacco are the biggest problem in outdoor advertising today.
