The Scarlet Letter

The Scarlet Letter is structured around three main scaffold scenes and the characters involved in them. As we look at these three scaffold scenes we will se how the main characters of the story change in image and in personality. These three scaffold scenes all take place in the middle of town in the market place. The book starts off with the fist scaffold scene, where Hester Prynne leaves the prison to stand on the scaffold in the market place. In the first scene we meat our four main characters Hester Prynne, Pearl, Arthur Dimmesdale, and Chillingworth. Hester looks back to her past for comfort but then brings herself back to the reality of her shame. Narrator "Yes!-these were her realities,-all else had vanished!"(61). In this scene we meat Chillingworth who we find to be Hesters husband. He is in shock of what she has done. But he seeks revenge on the man who also deserves to stand

We also meat the reverend Dimmesdale. He wishes upon Hester to reveal the identity of her fellow sinner. In the past she would have never shown her affection to him. Now that Pearl is old enough to interact we se that she is wise beyond her age, and that she is thought to be evil. Chillingworth has aged very quickly and his face appears evil in his pursuit to find the man . As we look at Dimmesdale he has become ill and looks tired and defeated from having to withhold his sin. there was something ugly and evil in his face. In the second scaffold scene he stands on the scaffold in the protection of night to free himself from some of his guilt. As we look at the changes that the characters endure threw out the story we fin our selves sympathizing for Hester and Dimmesdale even though they have sinned. By the second scaffold scene we se many changes within the characters. Hester lived with her sin and excepts it without any complaints.
