Governments of the Massachusetts Bay Colony

A group of non-seperatist Puritans, belonging to the Catholic church of England believed that their church was corrupt because it was not open to just the "visible saints." They believed in pre-destiny and thought that only the people destined for heaven should be allowed in the church. This group addressed these concerns to the King of England, Charles I. They told him that they did not want to break away from the church of England, they simply wanted to seperate from the impurities. The King was open to this idea, and in 1629 a ro

yal charter allowing them to settle in Massachusetts was passed. The MBC was not a true democracy though because men who were not church members and women all together were not allowed to vote for governor and other positions dealing with the government. Since the government was run by only the church members, it was in the hands of few people. Along with being theocratic and democratic, the MBC government was oligarchic. They opened a church that was only available for the "visible saints. The MBC was a strong contributor and stepping stone to teh great nation we have today. The whole settlement was ruled by men who were members of the church. The government would hold open discussions among the public and decisions were made on majority-rule. The MBC was made up of several different types of government, the two main ones being theocracy and democracy. John Winthrop was a very big leader in the church and government. The government was also authoritarian. Also, men who said that they had recently been converted would be publicly interrogated. The MBC was also like a democracy in some ways. They tried to press God's rules onto believers and non-believers alike because the Puritans believed that they had an agreement with God to turn the MBC into a holy society.
