Carnaval The Biggest Party

Carnaval is one of the biggest Holidays in Brazil. The celebration is to commemorate the beginning of Lent, which is firmly rooted in the Catholic tradition. According to George Ancona in the book “Carnaval” he mention Carnaval as “the last "hurrah" before the beginning of Lent, so Sunday through Tuesday before Ash Wednesday, it is party time. In the Catholic religion, Lent is linked to fasting, and in particular to abstaining from eating meat. This is where the word Carnaval comes from. "Carna" means meat, eating and "val" refers to the "falling away". So, the definition for this particular Carnaval is the "falling away" from eating meat”. This occurs during Lent. Although most Catholics no longer strictly follow this tradition, it is still the root of Carnaval.

. . .
The parades are composed of school, and each school has about three to five thousand participants who are overwhelmingly poor people from the city's sprawling suburbs. For four days (at least officially, in many cities it's more than a week), the joyful feeling spreads over the streets and squares, from North to South, and from East to West. Carnaval parades and street parties are things that people never regret participating in and definitely never forget. Most of the time the blocos follow the Trio Eletricos, “huge mobile stages consisting of a very powerful sound system playing with a popular band on top, all pulled along by specially adapted trucks”, as defined by George Ancona. These parties happen all over the country and million of people go out into the street, and sometimes people wear costumes.

Carnival celebrations are hardly unique, but without a doubt, the Brazilian Carnaval party is the world’s wildest, glitziest and largest carnival of all. This is the world’s biggest party, period. Other times, it is a story or legend from Brazilian literature, a historical theme or even political satire. Each samba school must base its effort around a central theme. Banks, schools, and business are all closed. When the bands start to play, people go crazy and dance all night long. In this period all the country stops and very few people work. This event is watched by millions of people, either by TV or in the streets. Covered by anonymity, working class, businessmen, judges and maids dance all together. It draws people from all over the globe to participate in this fabulous party.
