To Kill a Mockingbird

In the novel "To Kill Mockingbird” by Harper Lee an important idea is that true courage is moral, not physical. Throughout the book these two types of courage are shown and through the children eyes and Atticus’ teaching I learned about it and realised that it was a very valuable lesson.

During the early chapters of the book, the children are involved in the stories and adventures they make up around Boo Radley. They are afraid of his reputation, and so childish fears need to be overcome by courage, for example walking instead of running past the Radley place and Jem returning to find his trousers. These are examples of physical courage and are important in showing the development of children, because, at first, they think this is what true courage means. It is also important to show the contrast between the physical courage and the moral courage shown in the book.

Atticus surprises the children with his physical courage when he shoots the rabid dog. They have always thought of him as old and not as strong as other fathers and so are surprised and very proud when he performs such a feat. Jem, however, understands better than Scout as to why th

. . .
Through Atticus Harper Lee showed me that courage is difficult and takes strength of will as well.

In Maycomb where there is racial prejudice, many citizens express doubt Atticus because he is going to mount a defense (even with the knowledge that he will fail) instead of just representing Tom. Dubose and also through the lessons that Scout and Jem learn, I saw that courage is a very important idea in the book and that it is very applicable to society today. She is courageous because she knows that she will die anyway and it will cause her significant pain and distress. But bravery runs deeper than the decision to carry a gun. After this Atticus tells his children about his beliefs in moral courage. In his summary of the case, Attticus has the courage to present common views about Negroes in Maycomb and to say that they are wrong. To Scout especially he teaches that you must stick to your beliefs even though others may not share them and you stand alone. Atticus’ defense of Tom Robinson and Mrs. He makes a clear and persuasive case and is proud of the fact that the Jury deliberated longer than usual before passing the guilty sentence. Through Atticus and his children, Harper Lee teaches us a very important lesson. eir father does not boast about his abilities, he believes that “courage is not defined by a man with a gun in his hand. Dubose is according to Atticus “the bravest person” he has ever met. I though this was amazing and also very inspiring.
