Art Appreciation
In the process of researching and comparing different works of art I chose to go to both Gilcrease and Philbrook museums. I believe the buildings and the surroundings of the buildings have a lot to do with how successful the museum is. Both museums have an elaborate entrance way which would lead the visitor to believe that once inside the same grandeur will continue. Upon entering Philbrook the awe from the exterior continued throughout the museum; on the other hand Gilcrease was rather disappointing to the viewer, especially after the beautiful entrance way. To me it looked as if most of their time has been spent on the exterior. Gilcrease as a whole was an enormous let down; from the pieces of art to the way the pieces were light. The lighting gave Gilcrease a cold and crypt like feeling which made me rush through the museum. If there were any pieces of art with bright coloring or great detail the atmosphere was sure to kill it. Somehow in this gloomy environment I found six pieces of art that I enjoyed. The first piece of art that really caught my eye was El Galope which was painted in 1943 by Jose Chavez Morado. This oil painting has a tremendous amount of motion from the horses running to the direction t
The third piece of art that caught me eye is oil on canvas painted by Oscar Edmund Berninghaus titled Winter Night Taos. The final piece I looked at had to have been my all time favorite. To make the flowers jump out even more Fechin applied the bright colors on top of the dull colors to make the flowers the main attention. In this carving the woman looks very bird like. I enjoyed my trips to both Gilcrease and Philbrook, although I will have to say I will not return to either any time soon. The frame around the painting is magnificent; it just maximizes the whole feeling of the painting with its intricate detail. The motion in this picture leads the eye to the mother buffalo protecting her calf. This piece of art is three dimensional and is very detailed from the toe nails to the eyebrows. With out looking at the title that is exactly what I thought of the painting. On the other hand the bad side as well has a head like figure which is outlined by a strand of Christmas lights, but the only thing that makes this side look evil is the way the lights look like they are choking all life out of the invisible head. Philbrook had many pieces I liked, but I narrowed it down to my six favorite. This painting has a very dreary feel to it, from the way the horses stand in the snow almost shaking to the way the sky is only one shade. This was the first piece of art that I actually saw nothing wrong, the craftsmanship is flawless, and the location was great. After going to Gilcrease first and being let down I did not let Philbrook's magnificent entrance faze me, but once inside I realized my visit was going to be completely different. All nine of the wolves facing off with her are all facing her ready to attack leading the eye to her, even the one wolf she killed is under her feet looking up at her.
