Hard Drives

Computers use many different types of mediums for the storage of data. Some examples are CDs, Hard drives, RAM and ROM. Each type of medium has a different purpose. For example, RAM is used to hold the programs and functions that the CPU most often utilizes, but RAM can only be used for short-term storage. In this essay I will discuss the parts of a hard drive, how a hard drive stores data, the different types of hard drives, the different type of hard drive connections and the multiple uses for hard drives. To begin with, I'll explain the physical make-up of the hard drive. A hard drive is made up of several key parts. These parts are the electronics, the motor, the platters and the arm. The electronics control how fast the motor spins the platters and how fast the arm moves across the platters. The motor is what physically spins the platters at up to 15,000 RPM. Inside a typical hard drive are four 3.5 inch platters, which are manufactured to extreme tolerances. Platters are usually made of high-precision aluminum or glass disks with layers of magnetic recording material on them. The data is magnetically stored here. The arm holds the read and write heads. The arm moves back and forth at very high speeds from th

Next, there is high-level formatting. A server is a computer used in a network for a specific purpose. Hard drives go through two types of formatting. This is suitable for people or businesses that need to use multiple operating systems or need to keep their information secure from anyone else. In this use the slave everything that goes onto the master hard drive is also copied onto the slave hard drive. Next, there is the external hard drive. Date is stored onto the surface of the platter in sectors and tracks. The hard drive is an ever-changing device and will be around for many years to come. This type of formatting writes the file storage structures such as the file- allocation table, often referred to as FAT, into the sectors. Sectors always contain a fixed number of bytes. Another connection type is ATA, AT Attachment, also referred to as IDE. There are many different types of hard drive connections. Low-level formatting prepares the hard drive to store blocks of bytes. ATA is the standard way for a storage device to connect to a computer.
