The Outsiders
In the novel, The Outsiders, events are depicted with great detail by the author but in film those events are somewhat lost on the screen in at least five instances. The first instance is revealed in that the story from the novel is told in first person from Ponyboy's perception, in the movie you do not know that he is telling the entire story. A good example of this is in the first sentence of the book when it starts with "When I," this allows the reader to know that someone is explaining from his or her point of view. An additional difference when reading the novel is reflected in the fact that the reader must use his or her own imagination to envision the story. An example of this would be when Ponyboy is reading the poem by Robert Frost. Here the reader has to imagine the sunset where in the movie the sunset reflects the words within the poem. The third difference would be that in a movie you lose sensory detail. This loss of sensory detail is illustrated when Ponyboy talks about getting into a situation with the Socs and he is explaining how he "could smell English Leather shaving lotion and stale tobacco." In a movie unless they disc
The first difference in watching a film as compared to a book is the fact you lose the eloquence and detail of words and events. The last difference would have to be in reading a book you get all the details and in a movie those details are lost. The last difference would have to be in the setting where the author was making the novel come to life. Another difference would be that by adding music to the words it can change the view and set a mood for the scene. The forth difference would be that when reading a novel you have time to stop and reflect on what has just been said and in a movie it does not allow for a time of reflection. In seeing the movie a viewer could realize where the author had made the settings for the novel. There are many differences between reading a novel and watching a film and I for one am a person who would much rather experience a novel in full detail and use my own imagination to make the novel come to life. A good illustration of this would be when Ponyboy is explaining about the chocolate cake and how it has become an important part of their everyday life. A good example of this would be when Ponyboy is describing how Johnny looked when he died, as though he was sleeping. The best examples of this would be seeing the skyline of Tulsa and the Admiral Twin drive in theatre. In the movie you see the chocolate cake but would never know how important or significant it is to Ponyboy. For instance when Ponyboy is describing the death of Johnny as a reader you have time to stop and think about how this might have affected you but in a movie it only allows you to think of the characters. Moviegoer's auditory senses are brought to life right before the rumble with music while it played through the scene allowing the viewers to get more involved with the scene. In a movie unless the character says this you would not know how he thought Johnny looked.
