12th night
“If music be the food of love, play on… O spirit of love, how quick and fresh are thou…” is how Orsino, a duke helplessly in love with Olivia, starts the Shakespearean play, “Twelfth Night.” This comic play takes place in Illyria and is centered around love, confusion, and disguise. Olivia, who lives in a large household with her Uncle, Sir Toby, and many servants, is mourning over the loss of her brother. She wears a black veil and does not plan to see anyone or court anyone for seven years. This does not stop Duke Orsino, because he is too in love with Olivia and still tries to marry her. At this time Viola has been rescued from at shipwreck on the coast, but she seems devastated because she thinks her brother, Sebastian, has been lost in the wreck. Completely distraught, she wants to become a servant of Olivia’s and live a hidden life with her, but she is told that will not happen since Olivia will not see anyone. Viola’s other option is to disguise herself as a man, “Cesario”, and become a servant of Orsino’s. Orsino becomes fond of Cesario very quickly as a . . .
servant, as Cesario started to fall in love with Orsino. Sebastian, Viola’s (Cesario) brother, in fact is alive and made it through the shipwreck. This is where we meet the crazy household of Olivia’s: her Uncle, Sir Toby, and his friend, Sir Andrew, are constantly drunk, Feste is the house clown, Maria is the handmaiden, and the head servant, Malvolio. Cesario had to hide her love for Orsino because she was still disguised as a man. The costumes really added so much to the play. The truth only leads to happiness though because Viola can profess her love to Orsino, and Olivia can be with Sebastian and the love triangle, which was the problem, is now broken and the tension is released. Cesario has come with the message from Orsino, but Olivia at first refused to speak to him until Malvolio tells her he is a handsome young man, and then she agrees to see him. This is the turning point, and one thing leads to another until Cesario and Sebastian end up in the same room. Orsino is in love with Olivia, Olivia is in love with Cesario, and Cesario is in love with Orsino, but cannot show it. It was hard to fit it around my schoolwork, extracurricular activities, and band, but I managed it okay. I usually have a hard time understanding Shakspeare, but this play seemed to move along smoothly, and it was directed very well. They really added description to each and every character.
