Original Poem - Outside Looking In

I stand outside, the white, fluffy snow falls softly to the ground
I look over at a rather peculiar window display
I see a tiny little candle, its flame burning brightly
I see a small television showing events that seem oddly familiar
I watch the candle as the hot liquid wax rolls down its side
I watch as the small flame grows and shrinks
The flames actions seem to be oddly synchronized with the events on the television
I watch a young man going through life, growing up
Every time he is in a tough situation and he wants to give up, I watch the flame dwindle
I watch as the boy pulls through it, and the flame starts to grow
I open the window, and for some reason I feel at home in the display
I can smell the food that the young man eats
The aroma of scrambled eggs mixed with that of cheese and bacon tickles my nose
The determination that the young man possesses is so extraordinary I can smell it
The vision of the candle comes to my head
He is trying to comfort her in a time of need, just one of the painful ordeals their family faces
I hear a crackle from the little candle flame
The flame has grown with the growth of a young man's determination
I reach out to touch the television, and suddenly I become part of the scene
The feeling of the place is bittersweet in taste
This is the taste of sadness mixed in with the love in a family
Suddenly I realize that the young man is me
I realize that the flame symbolizes my determination to go on, not to give up
I go back to reality, the peculiar window display changing me forever
