The Grateful Influence
Any band that includes artists like Thelonius Monk, Miles Davis, and John Coltrane on their list of their inspirations surely has an appreciation for improvisation. This band has been said to be "One of the great, great, insane groups in the world today..." Bill Graham, introducing the Dead onstage at the Fillmore East, Feb. 11, 1969. The Grateful Dead emerged in the 1960’s along side artists like Led Zepplin, The Doors, and Jimi Hendrix. This era sparked a revolution in the world of music. The Grateful Dead played music together for thirty years. This can only be contributed to the unique style of their music, and the improvisational abilities of each of the band members. Their music combines the sounds of jazz, rock, country, blues, bluegrass, and R&B. However, this band also sparked a counterculture of acid freaks, geniuses, and lunatics that we now refer to as deadheads. These hippies would flock to the concert venues in their VW Bus, living footloose and fancy free. The Vietnam War also fueled the revolution of these young Americans. People were ready for a change and music was an avenue of expression, or a voice for the ideals of the deadheads. The extraordinary ability of The Grate . . .
None are more important to me than the Grateful Dead. This era of Grateful Dead music was at a profound peak in its evolution in part because Pigpen could close a show like nobody's business. However thanks to the help of David Grisman on the mandolin, “American Beauty” is one of the greatest Grateful Dead albums ever produced. I grew up in the Sixties, and some of these artists and musicians were my heroes, in the true meaning of the term. Their next idea came in a time of mourning for both Garcia and Lesh. The rise of the acid culture in the Bay Area lead Jerry to a man named Phil Lesh. From the fans to the band, a tremendous sense of unity was always present when the artists of The Grateful Dead walked on stage. One devoted fan described this passion saying, “The music of the Haight-Ashbury is special for me. "The Grateful Dead really owes most of its interest to serendipity -- just the fact that everyone in the band is very different and has very different musical backgrounds. The half an hour songs would be improvised during shows to last as long as three hours with the band constantly going in and out of songs. This was produced after Crosby, Stills, and Nash had played with the dead, inspiring more vocal harmonies in their songs.
