Detraining in Football

Detraining is very popular in the sport of football. Football is a multi-component sport that depends on a number of energy sources to meet the strenuous physical demands. Football also expends a certain amount of muscular energy in a both dynamic and static manner. Few other sports place such a demand on the athlete’s ability to produce high levels of muscular power. The training regimen must necessarily focus on the development of strength, power, aerobic fitness, flexibility, and agility.

Detraining in football is considered as inactivity or decreased levels of activity in either training routine or during the

. . .

A recent study conducted investigated possible detraining effects in a variety of physiological and performance tests.

The main thing is that coaches should monitor athletes to ensure maximum capacities for an entire season. I would experience a decrease in strength and endurance and oxygen consumption levels. The practice sessions during the season are fitted to maintain the progression of the athletes that they achieved during the off and pre seasons.

The article was very beneficial to me as an athlete in a sense that I experience a great effect of detraining after the end of our long season. Muscle test strengthening in all categories all decreased. I was aware of my decreasing performance in these tested areas, but never knew why that was happening and the reasons for it. They also tested flexibility in knee and shoulder abduction. They were given an anaerobic power test and a maximum oxygen consumption test.

The results in this study could suggest a number of things. I now know why and am grateful I furthered my knowledge with this article. The players that increased might not have showed up for training camp in their best possible shape.

To analyze results of the pre and post season performances on the tests the players were placed into two separate groups. They also tested them on field tests in bench press, vertical jump, and a 20 yd shuttle run. I sort of figured that strength and flexibility tests would be decreased.
