Andrew Jackson

             Andrew Jackson was the seventh president of the United States of American and he was one of the most influential presidents of our time. He born in a backwoods settlement in the Carolinas in 1767, he received sporadic education. But in his late teens he read law for about two years, and he became an outstanding young lawyer in Tennessee. Andrew Jackson was at the center of America's most pivotal era, a time he so completely dominated that it is known today as the "Age of Jackson."
             One of the first things Jackson did when he was in office was establish a "spoils system" In which he hired people that he knew personally or supported him rather than fitness for office. During his two administrations, Jackson replaced less than twenty percent of federal office holders. That percentage was the same as his predecessors, but differed in that Jackson's dismissals were clearly more politically motivated.
             Another thing that Jackson decided to fix was the banking system. Deposits were beginning to be placed in state banks known as "pet banks." The federal government began to see an annual surplus of about $10 million and, for the first time in the history of the United States, no federal debt existed. The Bank, however, still held control over state banks with the ability to ease or tighten credit. This was not a perfect plan and many problems happened such as high inflation, but soon, the minting of a new dollar was announced and it was Andrew Jackson who had restored "real money" to the nation.
             Finally one of the most important problems of Jackson's presidency was how to remove Native American's from their ancestral lands in the Southwest. Giving concern for their welfare, Jackson proposed moving them to distant lands in Oklahoma, west of the Mississippi. The policy was a disaster.
