Stereotyping Black Students on White Campuses

This purposed study about stereotypes as relative to racism allow society to Better understand, how black students cope with stereotypical judgments about their pre conceived notions of their intelligence or their ability to succeed in college. Stereotypes are defined as overgeneralizations about the appearance, behavior, or other characteristics of members of particular categories ("Sociology in Our Times"306). The African Americans are the members of such a particular category known as the minorities to the predominantly white institution. In order to understand what they go through this study "Facing Stereotypes: A case study of black students on a white campus" was conducted. It consisted of focus groups and selected individual interviews with fifteen academically successful black students who talked about what and how they deal with stereotyping among their ethic group.Stereotyping can be either positive or negative however, in this situation the blacks are being stereotyped of negative expectations and perceived as intellectually inferior. Due to such assumptions, black students feel abandoned and isolated from the campus and the college life. As students they encounter a number of problems at college. They experience r

The literature in the journal goes in-depth on what each participant said and they expressed personal moments when stereotyping occurred in their college. This article is very biases on the fact that it pointed fingers to the white population only. I feel that no matter what color a person is they should have a safe, good learning environment to ensure the best out of any student. The sample consisted of six males and eight females, two of the students were freshmen, four were sophomores, six were juniors and two were seniors. However, I do agree that the blacks get stereotyped a lot more than the minarets of the college. Major ides arose from the study such as, comments from non-blacks about the black community, the process in which blacks have to go through to validate their intellectual competence in the classroom and having to deal with very personal stereotypes about their physical characteristics. Everyone is known to draw impressions or expectations on someone new to them. Two members of the research team were present at each focus groups and individual meetings. But that doesn't mean that the blacks do not stereotype others either. The article stated that these students have learned to manage and cope with the stresses that accompany interaction with members of other ethic groups yet at what cost emotionally? They feel that all colleges and universities must develop strategies that acknowledge and respond to the general, intellectual, and personal stereotypes that black students encounter. This creates an impact on the students mind and these students may conform to the stereotypes and begin to drop themselves down to the discriminating standards of low academic capabilities. Three questions guided this research: 1. Thirteen of the students lived on campus and were active on the campus in various social and academic programs (Sharon 3).
