No symbol is more potent than the computer in society today. Information technologies in general, and computing in particular, are widely understood as key engines of social change, driving the inexorable transition from the world as it was to the one that is emerging. A conviction that computerised ways of doing things are vastly more efficient--quicker, more powerful and authoritative, more cost-effective--than their conventional counterparts leads me to believe that Information Technology has improved Society.The claim has Information Technology improved Society however is a highly debatable one. Firstly, has it improved society or not? Secondly you have to define different parts of the claim. What does "improved" really mean? Can you define "improved" as 'changes that give more efficiency' or is it 'to raise to a more desirable or more excellent quality or condition - in other words make things better. Information Technology enabled this via the internet combined with a well-designed information systems infrastructure that allowed customers to electronically contact Dell and design a PC for their specific needs. Take Travel for example nowadays you do not have to use a travel agent, but you book your flights via the internet and all you have to do is turn up at the airport and hop on your plane. For example they learn how to cultivate grains more effectively than before. Once sponsored the child has a chance to go to school. The loss of even 5 minutes airtime can costs companies millions of dollars and is certainly not very efficient. Telecommunications plays an integral part in society today. As humans we have come to rely on the efficiency of technology and this has improved society. This in effect cuts out the middleman (travel agent), but not all people have access to the internet so the agent is still required.
