Goya is one of the greatest Spanish painters who lived in a very dramatic time in thehistory Spain. The changes in history affected the works of this artist throughout thecourse of his life in addition to many obstacles that he had to overcome in his personal When the works of Goya are examined as a whole, individuals could see that thisartist lived his career through the baroque period and advanced to the romantic period. Goya's works would be influenced with the pass of time and also the maturing of hischaracter (Gassier,15). The works of Goya ranged from royal portraits, melancholicallyimages in oils, satirical drawings, engravings of the revolution and paintings of war Goya was born on March 30, 1746 at a small town south of Saragossa calledFuendetodos. Not much is known about his childhood nor about his movement ofresidence to Saragossa later on his life with his family. His family moved to the city tofind a better living . Goya must have been around three to five years old at the Goyas works included portraits of royal figures, and one of his greatest portraitswas Charles IV and his Family. In this portrait Goya is influenced by Velazques who h
The print is in black and white (Mathews,469). One of his most dramatic paintings of thewar was The Third of May, 1808, in Madrid: the shooting on Principe Pio Mountain. econsidered to be the best painter of all time (Gassier, 22). In the work of art The Caprichos there is one engraving thatgives away the theme for the whole entire work. This paint shows two huge men flying through a field where horseman arefighting. Thepainting that Goya made these years were related to the tragic scenes of war and theresults of it. The first stage in his life, he lived under the rule of Charles III and was verypeaceful. The engraving is called El sueño de larazon produce monstruos (The sleep of reason produces monsters) and it tries to tell thatif and individual puts his reason to sleep than monsters will rule his mind. In the Caprichos(caprices), Goya makes a reference to sources of folly like vanity, pride, deception andsuperstition (Schickel,108). Thisinvasion produced six years of war and made Goya create his best works of art. Inthis painting a group of men are being executed by several French soldiers. Only theusage of reason will stop this monsters in entering a person's mind (Matthews,469). Goya must haverecorded this images from personal experiences in war (Schickel, 132), At the end of Goya's career, he moved to the outsides of Madrid to a countryhome called La Quinta del Sordo (the house of the deaf man). Goya did not portrait the war like others artist did. These scenes were recorded in a series of eighty two etchings calledDesastres de la Guerra (Harris,15).
