New World Order

In the book Lord Of The Flies by William Golding shows us as the reader how rules, laws, and other regulations are all forgotten that human nature will revert to a primitive state of being. The overriding theme of the novel is the conflict between two competing impulses that exist within each human being: the instinct to live by rules, act peacefully, follow moral commands, and value the good of the group on the one hand; and the instinct to gratify ones desires, act violently to obtain supremacy over others, and enforce one’s will on the other. Through the symbols Golding is able to show the struggle of power, and the struggle of trying to stay civilized.

In the beginning Piggy is able to find a conch shell and gives it to Ralph to be able to gather everyone on the island together. As a result, the conch shell becomes a powerful symbol of civilization and order in the boy’s lives. The conch shell is used to govern the boys meetings: whoever holds the shell is given the right to speak, making the shell more then a symbol; it is an actual vessel of political legitimacy and democratic power. As the islands civilization starts to diminish and savagery begins to dominate the boys, the conch shell loses its

We see the power struggle between the savages and civilized by the fight over Piggy’s glasses. Jacks need for power shows how Jack has become from civilized to Savage and this is what Golding wanted us to see the struggle for power between the civilized and the savages. The fire kind of functions as a measuring stick, when the fire is up and maintained the boy’s show their desire to be rescued; but when the fire goes low the boy’s lose sight of civilization and convert to the savage life. Through the symbol of fire Golding shows us how the fire is able to keep the boy’s civilized but as the fire grows low the boy’s lose sight of civilization and become more savage like. He is able to realize that they fear the “beastie” because it exists within each of them. The “beastie” is in every boy on the island and it is growing within each and everyone of him. Thorough the symbols we can see how the boy’s grow as savages and leave there civilized lives behind them. Golding shows us through the “beastie” how less civilized the boys are becoming and more savagely they are becoming. Golding is able to show us how Jack is needs power buy having him go out and raid Ralph’s camp and steal the glasses.

Piggy is the most intelligent, rational boy in the group. The only person that is able to see why the kinds are afraid of the “beastie” is Simon. As long as the fire is maintained the boys exhibit the desire to return to civilization and society, but when the fire burns low or goes out, the boys lose sight of their desire to be rescued, having accepted their savage lives on the island.

Golding is able to show us how civilized people are able to become savagely without rules are a secure political system in their society. When the tribe steals the glasses from Piggy they have also taken the power to make fire, and leave Ralph’s civilization helpless.
