My report on Maria Gaetana Agnesi
When I think of mathematicians, I think of men and women working contentedly throughout the night, leaving their families, dedicating their entire lives to solving the complex equations and fundamentals of math itself. Now, when I think of Maria Agnesi, I think of someone completely different. Maria was an amazing person. She dedicated her life to helping bring up her siblings, and helping the poor and less fortunate. And with all of that going on, she still had time to go about solving equations and wondering about the fundamentals of math. She solved many amazing and complex equations and was the first woman to be elected as the honorary lecturer and the Chair of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at the University of Bologna. She survived countless hardships, but yet excelled in mathematics and various other studies as well. This was all in a time period when women were looked down upon in most parts of the world for being educated. In the end, when she had given her love for mathematics up, she still had the huge heart to go and help all of the many people who were suffering. She was an amazing person, and she must be recognized not only for her mathematic skills, but also for her amazing personality and kindness tow
Many came to her, talking and asking questions on her work and other theories. At the age of nine, she also published a book in Latin on the benefits of educating women. These essays were based on what she remembered from the nightly discussions at her house. These took place around the living room in the Agnesi home. So, Maria went through with the nightly discussions, until her mother died, in 1732, when Maria was 14. The book's success became known world wide, and it was translated into many different languages, and used as textbooks in many schools. Most women at that time became educated when their brothers had a tutor, who taught the girls in the family as well. She accomplished all of this at a time when females were not always supposed to be educated. Many people say that Maria's work was inspired by her father and with his passing; she no longer wanted to study mathematics without him. This gave her the excuse to stop coming to the nightly discussions, which she had hated so much. Since she was the eldest of the eight children (later to be 21), she had to manage the household for her father. Maria Gaetana Agnesi was an amazing mathematician and person. She had an amazing grasp of mathematical concepts, but she also lived out her life being an amazing humanitarian, helping sick and needy women. She spoke French fluently by five, and mastered six other languages, including Hebrew, Latin, and Greek, by the age of nine.
