Aspects of Place
The article “Israel waits for sea of Galilee’s Low Tide to Turn” will provide specific examples of John Agnew’s aspects of place. The main point of the article is that the Sea of Galilee has suffered from severe drought and is a threat to Israel’s everyday life. Location and sense of place are the two concepts that will be discussed in this paper. Agnew’s meaning of location is how a particular place defines its function and how that function relates to a broader economy. Sense of place can be defined through various lenses including, landscape and cultural perspectives. Sense of place is a connection of identity and character to a particular place. That connection might include memories or feelings of a certain place. In the article there are several examples that define location. Tourism is one example that can be used to define location. The Sea of Galilee has many docking areas for tourist ships, which can be seen in the photograph above the article. In paragraph 5, line 1 supports this by . . .
Prior to the assignment my definition of place was simply a place where something is located, not how it interacts with a world economy. An average reader without the knowledge of these concepts can walk away understanding the article, but might not realize the concepts that I have discussed above. Paragraph 15, line 5 supports this idea by stating, “citrus fruits, were abandoned by many growers”. The outside world knows the sea as the Sea of Galilee, but local residents use Kinneret because it creates a sense of place for them. For example, Jordan’s economy can be ruined if the Sea of Galilee can’t support its water consumption. The Sea of Galilee also plays a major role in the world economy. The Sea is a primary source of fresh water for irrigation of crops, which include citrus fruits. This project has given me the ability to uncover specific details, which enables me to have a better understanding of the article. The sea also creates an identity for those Israelis living there. Jordan relies on the Sea of Galilee for some of its water consumption. I have also noticed my perception of sense of place has totally changed after completing this assignment. The Sea of Galilee is an important component in the agriculture economy as well. In paragraph 15, line 1 the water commissioner states, “the crisis forced him to curtail water for Israeli agriculture by a third”. The importance of the sea in the world economy is that exports of citrus fruits will be cut back. A simple review of the article immediately draws to my attention that the concept of location can have serious effects on an economy.
