October Sky Review
I selected the movie October Sky to review because I heard it was based off a real story from a few of my peers who have seen it. Also the previews highlighted a launch of rockets which sparked a interest to see what this movie was all about. October Sky is set during the space race between the Soviet Union and the United States. The space race was jump started in 1957 with the launch of the Soviet satellite Sputnik. The competition between the two nations for supremacy in space had begun. In 1958, the United States fought back by launching its first satellite, Explorer I. Also in 1958, the United States became committed by creating The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). NASA is the federal agency devoted to exploring space. In 1959, The Soviet Union launched Luna 2. Luna 2 was the first space probe to hit the moon. In 1961, the Soviet Union gained the lead by sending cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin and he became the first person to orbit the Earth. Also in 1961, Alan Shepard, Jr. became the first American astronaut in space. In 1968, the United States launched Apollo 8, the first manned space mission to orbit the moon. Finally in 1969, the United States sent astronauts Neil Armstrong, Edwin Aldrin and Michael Col . . .
Finally Homer became a NASA engineer training astronauts for space shuttle missions. Armstrong became the first man to walk on the moon and was followed by Edwin Aldrin. This movie shows them that to reach their dreams they need to work for them and not simply expect the dream to happen. During this time in history, fear of war loomed around the world during the space race. I would recommend it to everyone, especially my peers. I would encourage every young person to watch October Sky because it would shake the feeling entitlement and promote the need to work hard to meet their dreams. But some of the people became intrigued and started coming out in droves to watch the “Rocket boys” launch their homemade missiles. The lost rocket was recovered and the boys were acquitted of the charges because a flare used by an airport caused the fire. This theme is seen through the entire movie, October Sky. The “Rocket Boys” proved that with hard work and determination even against the greatest odds, you can achieve your dreams. Homer assists in proving the “Rocket Boy’s” innocence when accused of burning down a forest with a stray rocket. By actually seeing someone accomplish their goals made me feel that an all things are possible and with a lot of effort dreams will happen. By Homer overcoming the odds to complete his goal helped me feel that anything in life can be accomplished.
