Dr. Norman Bethune
Personality is what makes us human. Most people when asked, "What is a personality?" will respond that it refers to one's public image and the way people view that particular person. But personality goes deeper than those mediocre definitions. Personality encompasses our childhood and present, our motives and drives, our needs and experiences, it is social and is specifically human. Understanding someone's complex personality is a difficult task and in this essay I will try to unlock Dr. Norman Bethune to try and realize why he did what he did, what is his personality and who influenced Bethune to become the great man that he became. I will use a combination of the various personality theories and take the relevant outlooks which I believe make up Bethune as a person. In the Freudian tradition personality is linked with the past and significant events that effect an individual during certain stages of their life. Little is known about Bethune's childhood but what is known is significant. Henry Norman Bethune was born on March 3, 1890 in Gravenhurst, Ontario. He was the first son to parents Malcolm and Elizabeth. Malcolm's job (a minister) moved the family frequently to small towns throughout Ontario. Bethune's given na
These individuals have become a part of Bethune and he a part in them. Bethune was a radical man of action, who believed that when you perceive something as being wrong, the only moral choice is to go and put it right. So now Bethune has become his father's father in a sense. His personality changes drastically from being self-loving to utterly selfless which therefore denies any theory that suggests that human personality is innate and unchangeable. Usually the young boy is proud of and identifies with his penis. And this is proved in examining Bethune's life. His name implies energy, conviction, and selfless humanitarianism. Up to this point Bethune had been striving for money and now he was slowly beginning to realize that the way he was making it was unfulfilling and meaningless. However, other members of the medical community did not appreciate this; they were happy treating the wealthy that could afford to pay their expensive fees. So Bethune personalised his grandfather. Bethune was fascinated by Darwin's Origin of Species, even though he knew his family thought it was anti-Christ and actually put it under his sleeping mother's pillow as a prank! These behaviors mentioned above in Bethune's childhood obviously help draw the conclusion that even as a child Bethune was independent, strong and defiant. This sometimes causes inabilities to stay with a single partner later in life.
