Reforms by Qing government and the Meiji government

The Qing government and the Meiji government had carried out different reforms, in order to build up a rich country and a strong army. There were some similarities and differences between the aims of their respective countries.

For the similarities, the reforms carried out by both Qing government and the Meiji government aimed at building a rich country and a strong army. First, the Qing government had carried out the Self-Strengthening Movement to defend itself agai

However, the Meiji government aimed at attaining world power status while the Qing government aimed at pacifying the discontent in China. Second, the two governments had introduced economic reforms to modernize the countries by developing heavy and light industries, and building railways to improve transportation, thus, to improve economy. Moreover, the two governments wanted to learn western science and knowledge by carrying education reforms. On the order hand, China had also carried out military reform, but it only aimed at pacifying the discontent in China. Second, Japan carried out military reform, which was to modernize the army and navy, not only to defend itself but also to achieve the expanist policy, aiming at attaining world power status. Also, the Meiji government had introduced military reform, in order to build up her strength to resist foreign penetration.

To conclude, the reforms carried out by both Meiji government and Qing government aimed at defending itself, building up economy and learning western knowledge. nst further foreign aggression since China was defeated in wars. The Meiji government had introduced constitution that Japan became a constitutional monarchy, turning Japan into a modern state.

For the differences, first, the aims of political reforms carried out by the two governments were different. However, the aim of the political reform carried out by the Qing government was to pacify discontent since there were potential unrest and revolutionary tide taken place in China.
