North and South: differences that caused the Civil War

             On April 12, 1861, the Confederates stationed at Charleston Harbor opened fire on the Union vessel that was delivering supplies. This was the beginning of the Civil War. There were many events throughout the 1800's that led up to the succession of South Carolina and the rest of the Deep South. Both the North and the South were in positions to defend themselves. At the heart of all the conflict was the issue of slavery.
             In the South, slavery was always seen as appositive good, but Southerners were paranoid about attacks on their way of life. The invention of the Cotton Gin in1793 made cotton the staple crop of the South, which meant there was an increased need for slave labor. The future of slavery changed and now more than ever planters held sway over economic and political activities. The theme in the South was Southern Nationalism, which carried a value of agriculture and saw trade as degrading. In 1803, slavery was illegal in Ohio, and by 1805 most northern states had laws against slavery. As a result, there was a growing number of free blacks, which worried the South. The economy in the North was based on the North Free Labor Idealology, that wealth was left in a person's own hands. The growth of northern industries, such as the textile boom was because of the increased availability to cotton. New York and Philadelphia became the two largest ports for international and domestic trade.
             The Second Great Awakening throughout the 1820's and 30's brought about large evangelistic groups that believed Christ would come to earth when the world was perfect, so they devoted their lives to make the world perfect. Abolitionists became very active in using moral suasion to help others see what a sin it was.
