Oxy the Iceman
On September 19th, 1991, a German couple hiking in the Otztal Alps, discovered a human head and shoulders sticking out of the ice. Four days after the find, on September 23, 1991, the body was officially recovered. The couple were unaware that they had just discovered the world's oldest and best-preserved mummy. Oxy was guessed to have lived as long ago as 4000 BC. According to the information I have learned, I believe that Oxy the Iceman lived during the Neolithic time. One example which makes us believe that Oxy was from the Neolithic period was the food found in his stomach. Scientists found the food to consist of a bit of unleavened bread made of einkorn wheat (the most importa
nt wheat of the Neolithic time period), some other plant, possibly an herb or other green and meat. Two grains of barley and some wheat chaff were found in the iceman's clothing. The sample of food led us to believe that the wheat had been finely ground into mean and made into bread, rather than eaten as a porridge. Oxy has been a very valuable piece of information about pre-historic time and scientists continue to attempt to answer the questions surrounding Oxy the Iceman. The sample also contained many different varieties of pollen. Other reasons that lead us to believe Oxy was from the Neolithic period are the tools and equipment found with him. The clothing that was found on the Iceman is the first time Neolithic clothing has been found so well preserved. The hop hornbeam tree blooms between March and June. Oxy was found wearing a fur cap, a upper garment made of pieces of fur sewn together, fur leggings held up by a belt, a soft leather loincloth, and leather shoes. One item that strongly linked Oxy to the Stone Age is his copper-bladed axe. A combination of the food Oxy consumed, the tools he was found with, and the clothes he wore all lead us to believe the Iceman lived during the Neolithic Era. All of his equipment confirm beliefs of Oxy belonging to the Neolithic period. He was also found with, a tool for resharpening flint blades, a leather pouch (which contained two flint scrapers, a gouging tool, a bone needle and a mass of black fibers), a hank of light rope, two canisters of birch bark, a frame of a pre-historic backpack, a dagger, and a quiver with 14 arrows. Scientists have learned that the Neolithic people were farmers, growing varieties of wheat and barley.
