Book Review-The Two Towers
In The Two Towers by J.R.R. Tolken, the fellowship, which now consists of Aragon, Gimli, Legolas, and Gandalf, travel to Oronac, the evil Saruman's lair. On the way there they stop at Helm's Deep, a fortress that is under attack by Saruman's forces. After successfully defending it against the Orcs, they continue their journey to Oronac. There they find Merry and Pippin, the two hobbits that were captured in the first book, who traveled to Oronac with the Ents, tree-like creatures, and have already destroyed all the town except Saruman's tower, which is defended by magic. They try to talk Saruman into surrendering, but he refuses and seals himself inside the tower. Leaving the defense of Oronac to the Ents, the fellowship leaves for Sauron's stronghold, Mordor. Here, the story shifts to Frodo and Samwise, the two hobbits that left the fellowship to travel to destroy the mystical ring alone. Gollum, a creature that has been warped by the ring's power, leads them. Eventually he leads them up into the mountains, where they come to a large passageway, which is the lair of a large spider-creature. The spider paralyzed Frodo, but not before he and Samwise critically injure it. Samwise, thinking Frodo is dead, leaves him, and leaves with
It is demonstrated with Frodo and Samwise, because during their journey they are constantly friends, and would die for each other if the circumstances required it. But, as he is leaving, he sees Orcs, who know of the spiders venom, take him and carry him away, towards a hidden door in the passage way. This is like the book because a party of people, not just one hero, undergoes the adventure. Personally I thought this was a boring story because it took forever for the fellowship to make decisions and actually DO anything, but I am the kind of person who needs excitement and action in his life constantly to keep interest in anything. Legolas is an elf, who loves forests and nature, but despises being underground. After curing the city they travel to find those responsible for that heinous act. At the start of this book, they are always quarreling, because they are such opposites. Not only uncharacteristic, normally they would rather die than go to these environments. Their undying friendship gets them through the tough times and the easier, but never is their friendship wavering. This showed they changed, because going underground for en elf is very uncharacteristic, as is going in the forest for a dwarf. Samwise pursues, but the Orcs seal the door right before he gets there, leaving him outside alone, to wallow in his misfortune. It will last forever, as long as they both shall live. Another connection I made to this book is to a comic book series I have read. the ring on his finger, becoming invisible.
