             Television today is one that varies from educational programs to that containing sexual explicit material. Until recently there was no way for parents to be alarmed of what type of program their children were to be viewing. This has been a valid argument for some time therefore causing a television rating system to be devised. This system is one that I firmly agree with for the sake of parents being able to monitor their children's television viewing and than being able to judge if they want their children watching such material.
             There is much controversy surrounding today's television programs. There is a new Federal Communications Commission (FCC) requirement, which was adopted last summer, to provide at least three hours a week of "core educational programming" for children. Although most television stations have already been doing this they "voluntarily agreed" to cooperate with this rule, considering how it would not cause much change in their already scheduled programming.
             I think that this rating system will help monitor parent's monitor their children's television viewing in that it gives the parents information about the program in the beginning seconds of whatever program turns on. Arnold Fege, director of governmental relations for the National PTA says "This is designed to be a consumer device, to give parents more information about programs, similar to the information they get from a nutrition label on the back of food." On a survey taken in 1997 by Annenberg Public Policy Center, they discovered that 40.7% of Kids have a TV in their bedroom. With this being the case, there is no parent in the room to say what they can and can't watch. There are a number of innovations that can assist parents in monitoring what their children watch even though they are not physically present. One is the rating system.
