John Adams

The only president who was a son of a president was John Quincy Adams. John Quincy Adams was the sixth president of the United States from 1825 to 1829. John Quincy Adams was born in Braintree, Massachusetts on July 11, 1767 to John and Abigail Adams. He was involved in politics since he was 12 years old. At the age of 12 he was with his father in Europe. While in Europe John was a French translator for Francis Dana, the United States Minister to Russia. He was also his father's secretary and during this time he became an accomplished diarist. When he came back to the United States he studied law at Harvard College. Upon graduation in 1790 he opened his own law office in Boston. In 1793 George Washington named him minister to Holland and then sent him to London to help John Jay in negotiations with the British. This negotiation was known as Jay's Treaty. Jay's Treaty was one of the major accomplishments for John Quincy. This treaty provided for the evacuation of British posts on the northwestern frontier of the United States to define boundaries between the United States and Canada. The treaty failed to resolve a dispute over American trade with British West Indies, but under the circumstances it was thought

The House of Representatives had to choose between Adams, Jackson and Crawford. John Quincy later appointed Henry Clay as Secretary of State and this action made Andrew Jackson irate and he charged them with "corrupt bargain". John Quincy is known in American History because of the way he was involved in the Jays Treaty, Treaty of Ghent, Monroe Doctrine and the abolishment of the "gag rule. In 1808 he resigned from the senate because of his endorsement of President Jefferson's policy of commercial warfare. The agreement was intended to settle long-standing differences between the United States and Great Britain and to secure American neutrality. He also helped John Jay with the Jay's Treaty, which gives us today the United States and Canadian border. The Monroe Doctrine has been used throughout the 19th century and even into the 20th century. The "gag rule" is when the House or House committees exclude from consideration any petitions for the abolishment of slavery in the District of Columbia. We do not own slaves and we are not under the European rule. This same year President Madison appointed John Quincy to be minister to Russia. This acquisition was very important to the United States since it gave us a boundary to the south seas. While he was Secretary of State he forced Spain to surrender Florida and to make a settlement of the Louisiana boundary in the Transcontinental Treaty written in 1819. John Quincy was a supporter of the doctrine which separated Europe from America. After 1835 Adams was with the antislavery forces but not with the abolitionists. " This is why I think John Quincy Adams is a very important person to American History.
