Honesty Is Not Always The Best Policy

Once there lived a woodcutter who was very hard - working. One fine day, whilst cutting down a tree, his axe fell into the river. The poor woodcutter began praying to the almighty to help him. The River Goddess emerged with a Golden axe and gave it to the woodcutter. The woodcutter honestly refused to accept it since it did not belong to him. The Goddess then emerged with a Silver Axe and presented it to the woodcutter. The woodcutter again refrained from accepting it because it wasn't his. Finally the Goddess emerged with an Iron axe. The woodcutter accepted it as it belonged to him. The Goddess was very happy with the woodcutter's honesty and gifted him all the three axes.
One day, the woodcutter's wife fell into the same river. The poor woodcutter cried to the River Goddess to help him again. The Goddess came out of the river with Aishwarya Rai. The woodcutter exclaimed that it was his wife. The Goddess was taken aback that the lied. She then emerged with Kareena Kapoor. The woodcutter said that she too was his wife. The Goddess was surprised that such an honest man could lie. Finally, The Goddess came out with his real wife. She expected that the woodcutter would refuse to accept her as his wife. But the woodcutter said that she was his wife. The Goddess was relieved. When the Goddess asked the woodcutter as to why did he lie, the woodcutter replied, "I am a poor man. It is difficult for me to make both ends meet. If you would have been happy with my honesty again and given me all the three as my wives, my life would have been hell!"
