Irish Unionism

History: Irish essay. Unionism and Nationalism in Ireland from 1895-1921.

How and what reasons was the movement for home rule led to the emergence of a militant Ulster unionism group between 1906-1914.

It was the fresh wave of political interest into Home rule from politicians that led to the rise of militant groups in Ireland. With so many complex issues trying to be resolved like argument of the stark contrast between north and south Ireland with the unionists cruelly drawing propaganda that uncultured thugs that would ruin the grandeur of Northern Ireland populated the south. They feared that Ireland would suffer the inequalities imposed by home rule. And with English politicians being caught in the middle their broad compromises more often than not did not appease the Unionist or Nationalists it often exacerbate the situation. And in Easter 1916 the attempted rising in Dublin and other militant events like this from the IRA or other factions of was the compilation of militant attacks.

The emergence of militant Ulster unionism was shown in full when Britain went to war.

. . .

The movement for home Rule Came from the Liberals programme of social reform that led to the quarrel with the house pf lords that would eventually lead to the delaying of the home Rule Bill from the Unionists and the Easter Sunday rising as a consequence of this. Asquith also did not fully negotiate with Redmond. Whilst Carson was rallying support for the covenant, the Unionists of the south were using their considerable influence in keeping the Home Rule of the statute book for as long as possible. This led to Redmond’s Irish Parliamentary Party numbering eighty-two, would hold the Balance of power. This was an emotional appeal that was signed by 200,000 Ulstermen on the day. Home Rule would aid the Break up of the United Kingdom and leave Ireland with a say in English affairs while England had no reciprocal rights. In Ulster the Unionists were quick to respond knowing that the conservative majority of 257 in the Lords had been their tool in slowing down any Act concerning Ireland that was not in their favour. Now this could protect them no longer. In defiance of the Home Rule Bill that was delayed until after the war. Redmond and 169,000 of the Irish volunteers rallied to the English flag showing the support in the fight against Germany. The Ulster unionists under James Craig lead the Ulster Unionists council organized resistance to Home Rule and began to arm its self along with the Nationalists doing the same along side them. Carson’s great standing and popularity led him to organize the Ulster unionists on Covenant Day, on 28 September 1912. Unionists used the propaganda of the economics of the Home Rule bringing emphasis on Ulster as a ‘prosperity province. The Lords digging their feat in over the pensions provision in 1908 led to the election of 1910 where the Liberals’ massive 400-seat landslide fall to 275, this was only two more than the Conservatives and Unisons.
