What is a hero? In the Cambridge dictionary a hero is "A person who is admired for having done something brave or having achieved something great, or the main character in a book, film or play, esp. one who is admired for their good qualities." I truly believe this defines Elie Wiesel and the horrific events he had to go through while at the concentration camps and the long marches to get there. Elie Wiesel to me is a hero for two things he did which are somehow survive, and never give up hope when looking death in the face.First I will focus on how Elie Wiesel managed to survive and how that makes him a hero. Survival is a mysterious thing. How do we survive when put thru hard tests of our strength and character? Elie Wiesel to me went through the most difficult test of his strength and character. I can only imagine the torture and beatings he went through. Just to be separated from his family he knew he would never see again was a test of
To me just being able to survive at a young age like he did with all the obstacles in his way make him a hero through and through. I believe that the ultimate test of strength and character is when his father dies and he feels he cannot continue any longer. He could have easily laid down in the snow when they stopped and died but he got up and kept on going. How can you press on when times are that rough and you have nothing to look forward except more misery. That to me is what a hero is all about. There is no way I could ever do what he has done and be able to become such a successful man even after that trauma on his life. One who is admired for doing something brave. It absolutely blew me away to not only survive this great torture but be able to tell such a powerful story that only brings back such wretched times. Elie Wiesel found something to look forward to and tried to focus on that. Secondly, never once did he give up even when he was certain he was going to die. That would have to be the most horrific pain you could feel. What an ultimate picture of courage. What a mature 15 year old to continue even though he has lost all hope for a family and be able to somehow survive the torment and brutality he had to endure. This one act of bravery on the part of Elie Wiesel touched me deeply.
