Muhammad

The basic creed of the more than a billion Muslims in the world is La ilaha illa Allah . . . Muhammad rasul Allah. This translates to "There is no god but Allah and Muhammad is the messenger of Allah" (Marston 7). Because Muhammad lived recently, compared to the founders of the other major religions, quite a bit is known about his life.Historians cannot figure out the exact date of Muhammad's birth, but the common consensus puts it around 570 AD (Phipps 34). His death, on the other hand, is well known to have occurred in 632 AD (Cook 14).Muhammad's father died shortly before his birth, so Muhammad's mother took him to live with husband's father (Marston 12). Muhammad's name means 'worthy of praise' or 'often praised' and was an unfamiliar name in Arabia (Salahi 23). He lived on the Arabian Peninsula, near the Red Sea (Martson 7). He was from the Quraysh. The Quraysh are an Arab tribe said to descend from a nobleman, Fihr ibn Malik, who lived eleven generations before Muhammad (Cook 12).As was common for young children, Muhammad was sent to live with a bedouin, or nomad, woman named Halima (Martson 14). Halima was from one of the poorest tribes, she had no milk for her own child and even her camels' were dried up. B

Islam means "submission" to God's will and Muslim means "one who submits" (Martson 30). Muhammad would often go into the caves near his home and meditate for spiritual guidance (Matson 25). ut when she took in Muhammad both her and her camels began to produce milk (Martson 14). Luckily he was taken in by his uncle Abu Talib, but unfortunately his uncle didn't have the money to send Muhammad to school so he tended to his uncle's livestock (Martson 16). Muhammad had, in Medina, a city that was willing to follow him and believe his teachings but he still longed to return to Mecca in triumph and in peace (Martson 61). This became known as the "pilgrimage of farewell" and was Muhammad's last public act (Martson 87). The Ka'ba was an ancient shrine to many of the Arabian gods, including Allah. In time the courtyard became the first mosque, an Islamic house of worship (Martson 50). He then told the men to spread a cloak out, put the stone in the center, have one man from each clan hold onto an edge of the cloak, and lift the stone into place together (Martson 24). The angel then ordered him to "recite" and taught him a passage of the ninety-sixth chapter of the Koran (Cook 15). Shortly after returning to Mecca Muhammad's mother died and then two years later his grandfather died. Abu Talib had been protecting Muhammad from the wrath of the Quraysh. One year later, on January 1, 630 AD, Muhammad returned to Mecca with 10,000 men. Muhammad spent fifteen years in Mecca while he kept periodically receiving revelations of the scripture, simple rituals, and morality (Cook 16). When Muhammad was older his uncle had him help with his trade dealings and due to his reliability and honesty in these transactions he came to be called Al Amin which means "the trustworthy" (Martson 22).
