1984

WAR IS PEACE. FREEDOM IS SLAVERY. IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH. In a book such as 1984, there are many conflictions such as those. But not all of them are as obvious. Some of them are in the mind. Winston Smith is a man being pulled in conflicting directions by his two desires, to rebel against Big Brother and to obey Big Brother. He knows the consequences of rebelling but he feels that it is right. The conflict he has in his mind causes him to do rebellious things, even though he knows that he will be caught. His mental conflict illuminates the book as a whole.

Winston must obey Big Brother since he works for Big Brother at the Ministry of Truth which, ironically, is not truthful at all. At the Ministry of Truth, Winston edits historical documents to meet Big Brother’s needs. Telescreens are another way that Big Brother keeps control over Winston and other citizens of Oceania. Winston

. . .
The other part of his mind that rebels, however, is much stronger and seems to take over Winston, causing him to rebel and do things that will get him in much trouble with Big Brother. Thoughtcrime is any bad thought or action against Big Brother. The thoughtpolice also keep an eye on citizens who might be plotting against Big Brother.

However, inside Winston is the part of him yearning to rebel against the government he despises. Winston finally gets his wish when O’Brien contacts him and invites him to his apartment. Due to the fact that Winston works for Big Brother and the fact that telescreens and thoughtpolice are always watching, Winston is forced to obey Big Brother. The words “DOWN WITH BIG BROTHER” were written repeatedly down the page.

Winston fears being caught for thoughtcrime yet he still continues to rebel. When Winston first touches pen to paper, he has committed a crime. Sex is forbidden by Big Brother and Winston knows this, yet he continues the affair nonetheless. Not only did he commit the crime of buying a diary, but he committed thoughtcrime as well. Winston believes O’Brien is a member of the Brotherhood, a secret organization against Big Brother, and wishes to speak to him. has a telescreen in his apartment which watches over his every move.
