Great Gatsby
"The American Dream: Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness" The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, is a novel about the "American Dream." In the Great Gatsby, the dream is that anyone can gain happiness by being wealthy and having power. To gain his happiness Jay Gatsby attempts to get the love that he once had before, of his first love, Daisy. The only problem with Jay's dream is that Daisy is all ready married. Gatsby's personal dream symbolizes the bigger American Dream "Life, Liberty, and The pursuit of happiness". Jay Gatsby lives for the past. In devotion to his true love he devotes his life trying to regain it and dies because of it. In the past, Jay had a love affair with a young rich, girl, Daisy. Daisy and Jay had fell in love with each other knowing that they could never be together because of the difference in their
This tells us that there is something wrong with the "American Dream" mentality, just like the get rich quick schemes of today, Jay is trying to buy Daisy's love, not obtain it. Gatsby's dream was doomed to fail because of his lack of morals. Those of the lower classes believe that their problems will go away if they can gain enough money to reach the upper class. He wanted his love with Daisy to grow. People believe that the "American Dream" is the upper class, and when they reach that point, not having to be worried about money at all. During their relationship, Jay was sent off to war. Even though story does not go into detail about how Gatsby's money was made, though by reading the book we can guess it wasn't made by legal means. The logic behind this is that being poor keeps people from being happy, and once you become rich, you do not have to worry with the problems of life, and can be happy. But to his demise, he had lost the ability to love. In Gatsby's rise to power his morals are sacrificed in order to gain wealth. He no longer had the morality or the ability to handle a loving relationship. The Great Gatsby takes this thinking, and shows what is wrong with it. He did reach the monetary requirements to love her, but he had focused too much on money and power the previous years of his life.
