Cancer Prophecies
Cancer, the untamed disease that infects our mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, uncles, aunts, and grandparents. Doctors tell you if you eat certain food items and vitamins that it can be prevented. Do you believe them? You hear about it on television, the radio, and just about every other form of media we have in the world today. When you hear about it you sit and think, “Well surely this won’t happen to me or anyone I know.” It can be caught in your colon, prostate, lungs, breast and every other anatomical part of the human body. Think it won’t happen all you want. I had to find out the hard way.In the winter of 1997 while sitting on my couch the day after Christmas and playing the video gaming system my parents just purchased for me I hear my mom say, “Honey, can you pause the game for me please. You and you sister need to listen to what your father and I have to say.” At this point I was trying to decipher what this could be about by picking up on their facial expressions and the tone of their voices. I had ruled out divorce because my parents have always gotten along. So I sat puzzled as to what this interruption of my ultimate gaming experience was about. Little did I know I was just about to hear t . . .
he most shocking and life altering news of my life. My life has been changed for the better. It can be a student's warehouse for lists and ideas about papers to come. I also learned that there are many reasons why people keep a journal. My sister and I had nothing to say, all we did was sit and stare at this foreign new world we were thrown into. I have found that writing can sometimes be the best form of expression and the human race probably would not advance and learn without it. Over a year passed and my Moms condition had improved immensely. They found cancer cells in my lower back and in my breast. After I heard that I went to my room and was sitting there and worrying about if I would still have a mom in the near future. At its best, great writing teaches us about ourselves. I then went to my drawer a picked up an old spiral notebook. Ever since this incident I have looked at writing in a new light. There were times I wouldn’t want to go visit her because I couldn’t stand seeing my mother in such a state where we couldn’t even communicate with her.
