The Thrill of Victory
The thrill of victory and the agony of defeat are the constant variety of sports that April Stowe thrives on each day of her life. The rush of adrenaline that she feels when she competes makes her yearn for the next time when she can flaunt her athletic skills. Performing is what she derives benefit from and is one aspect of her life that makes her the person she is; what her peers identify her with. Whether it is on the courts or in the fields when she comes to compete she conveys a spirit of dedication, hard working, and a competitiveness that people admire and hold in highest regards. As the early July afternoon brought forth a tepid and sultry heat, April and some of her friends had decided to convene at the city pool to take a cool dip and replenish their systems from the scorching sun. Just as she was about to head out the door the telephone rang with an annoying sound, as she knew her plans could be spoiled by one of her friends backing out on her. She picked up the phone and it was her talented friend Jake Hannon wanting to know if she would play some tennis with her, as he had no one to practice with that day. April had been very dedicated this summer practicing three to four days a week and about two hours each
As the team practiced more and more the drills became more excruciating and April could feel her exercise induced asthma beginning to agitate her breathing. The recreation softball league was coming to an abrupt end and April's team was in a great position to close their season with a win at the year-end tournament. April knew that it was crucial to perform her best today for the coach to select her for the regional team which would be a huge honor for her as a freshman. As the practice came to a halt an awkward silence permeated the gymnasium as the coach read off the names of the players. Regional volleyball tryouts were going on and the coach was selecting players to fill positions at the regional tournament. Thoughts of nervousness aroused in the players minds as the whole season was riding on one game. Only one team figured to be an obstacle on their path to achieving their season long goal. April plays softball for the sensation of winning and losing or failure was not part of her vocabulary, as it is the biggest pet peav she posses. The long awaited Saturday arrived in what seemed like a blink of an eye. The smell of fresh pierced the players' noses as they stepped out of their cars to the ringing of softballs recoiling off new aluminum bats. Aprils team knew that this team would be a great challenge, so they began to double their practice time two weeks before the tournament to refine their skills. That day Jake and she played for two hours in the baking sun, but April knew the sacrifices that it took to be The immense gym echoed with the sounds of volleyballs ricocheting back and forth across the shimmering floor. There are many sacrifices along the way but it is all part of what it takes to be a champion. session to try to advance her playing skills. In the last stretch of practice April focused all her effort on staying focused and finishing the practice strong in order to impress the coach.
