Is "Composed upon Westminster Bridge, September 3, 1802"
As seen in the two poems, Wordsworth and Blake both had a very different outlook on the city of London. As these two poets are from the Romantic Movement, there isn't much difference in the time in which they were written, so the variation in opinion could have arisen from personal outlooks and experiences. Along with Samuel Taylor Coleridge, William Wordworth was one of the Lake District poets. He loved nature and his inspiration for the poems he wrote came from the beautiful surroundings he often saw. "Composed upon Westminster Bridge, September 3, 1802" is a prime example of the way in which nature captured his heart. He looks upon London as a place of splendour, and is in awe of the vision of beauty he sees before him. The fact that he uses the words "Dear God!" shows that he is taken aback by what he observes. William Blake, however, took a different perspective when describing London, and it is from him that we learn of the underside to the visions of Wordworth's amazement.The contrast between these two poems is one that has the potential to link them together in Blake's book of innocence and experience. We learn of the Harlot's who are cursing their present status. Blake finds it tragic to learn that even something as precious as love is being traded in this street. The structures of the two pieces vary and create another reflection of the content of each poem. He personifies the city to make it seem more grand and giving it the highest form of respect. This is an example of Wordsworth encompassing every factor of the city and saying that there's nothing available to make his experience negative or dismal in any way. This phrase has a double meaning, it could be interpreted as the curse that is brought upon them by what they do, or it could also mean a verbal curse delivered by the prostitute herself. "And all that mighty heart is lying still!" (Line 14)By indicating to us that the city has a heart makes it seem as though it's alive beneath the sleeping houses, as if it has the pulse of a living man. Blake informs us of the lower class citizens of this city, which makes us immediately think of it as depleted and deprived. Another example of this is the comparison to the birth and creation of the earth. A concept very different to the mentioned "London". I think Blake's poem is a way of showing how the rapidly industrialising economy and society has corrupted all those who live in it. The general atmosphere of "London" is of sorrow and misery. In "Composed upon Westminster Bridge", there are no negative characteristics being made aware to us, so each poem gives us a one sided biased view based on opinion. The fact that these views are taken to the extremes of opposition makes them good contenders for Blake's book of Innocence and Experience. It is by comparing London to such grand events that he recreates the mood of glory that he felt when encountering this experience.
