Barbara Sobieszczanska
            
             I did my immigration project on Barbara Sobieszczanska. She emigrated from Poland to the United States in 1986. The reason why she and her family who now live in Lafayette left Poland was because of the condition. Many of the educated people could not find a good paying job. Also there was a shortage in Poland and getting everyday things like a dishwasher or dryer was almost impossible. So even if the people did have a well paying job, there was nothing to buy.
             When Barbara and her family first decided to leave the country they tried to go to Australia, but unfortunately they were rejected. So her husband moved to West Germany to work on the black market to make money while she stayed in Poland trying to get a passport. To maintain a passport was very difficult for her because the government new people wouldn't come back. When they did grant her a passport, they would not let her bring her newborn son. So her son stayed in Poland with his grandmother and Barbara went to West Germany to meet her husband.
             Once in the German government it was easier to get a passport. The government wanted to get people out of the country and helped them to do it. At the end the German government even paid for the plane tickets to the United States. In Germany Barbara and her Husband finally got permission for their son to go to Germany and live with them. When he got there they went threw the naturalization process. It consisted of questions on why they wanted to go to the United States. What were their thoughts about the culture and the government in America, etc... During the process Barbara had another child Julia. And in 1986 Barbara, husband, son and, daughter all left for New York.
             They arrived in New York on the thirty- first of June 1986. When they arrived they filled out papers and got identification and then flew to San Francisco. When people move to the United States form a foreign country they often live...
