Immagration Essay
I did my immigration project on Barbara Sobieszczanska. She emigrated from Poland to the United States in 1986. The reason why she and her family who now live in Lafayette left Poland was because of the condition. Many of the educated people could not find a good paying job. Also there was a shortage in Poland and getting everyday things like a dishwasher or dryer was almost impossible. So even if the people did have a well paying job, there was nothing to buy. When Barbara and her family first decided to leave the country they tried to go to Australia, but unfortunately they were rejected. So her husband moved to West Germany to work on the black market to make money while she stayed in Poland trying to get a passport. To maintain a passport was very difficult for her because the government new people wouldn't come back. When they did grant her a passport, they would not let her bring her newborn son. So her son stayed in Poland with his grandmother and Barbara went to West Germany to meet h
Barbara says she likes the United States and has made many friends, but her closest friends are still part of the Polish community. Once in the German government it was easier to get a passport. Barbara also stated how the people in the United States have food and an easy life so the citizens always feel comfortable so they don't bother to change anything they feel is wrong. What were their thoughts about the culture and the government in America, etc. The government wanted to get people out of the country and helped them to do it. Barbara went to Mill's College for two months and studied English as a second language, while taking care of her two children. She also doesn't like how everything that you ever do is recorded and anyone can know anything about you if they know a small number. After two years of living in Alameda the family made a move to Lafayette in September of 1988, where they still live now. They make more money and have raised a family here. When they arrived they filled out papers and got identification and then flew to San Francisco. During the process Barbara had another child Julia. And her husband went to work as a contractor. Not setting apart the fact it was a new language.
