Same-Sex Marriages: Should they be Legalized? Same-sex marriages remain a widely disputed controversy. Like in any conflict people tend to ignore the issue, pretending that since it does not affect their immediate, and every day life, that it does not exist. Same-sex marriages became a huge conflict partly because it closely involves the people that strike the controversy in the first place. In the book Getting to YES it depicts specific tools to solve conflicts such as legalizing same-sex marriages and or unions. Same sex marriages and or unions have already been legalized in a few states and it is a quest for the couples to make those few states become all of the states. In addition to getting notice in the United States countries all over the world, including Europe, are starting to adopt the legalization process for their countries (Merin 12). Same sex partners are having a lot more luck in Europe than in the United States. This is solely attributed to the more laid back, liberal stance that Europeans take (Merin 22). Moreover in Europe there is a reportedly "25 percent of multinational corporations that are prepared to recognize same-sex partners when recruiting men and women for jobs in Europe" (Garvey 5
The next method mentioned in the book Getting to YES is "principled negotiation produces wise agreements amicably and efficiently" (Fisher Ury, and Patton 83). The legalization of unions for same-sex partners is a debated conflict. It is important to concentrate on the merits of the problem, and not to be any effort or time into the melting of the parties. This point states that the only thing that you should give any leeway is your principles or theirs. For instance if a solution is agreed upon saying that the same sex couple promise not to use the same vowels as the straight couples, it presents a problem. Interest is the reason that these partners decided to create a union in the first place, however it is the public that tends to be the conflicting side (Fisher, Ury, and Patton 18). Our society has a certain norm in mind when judging people and situations. Recognizing the emotions is especially important in this conflict. The conflict between same-sex marriages and the public accepting and even allowing the unions to occur may be a long road. This creates an option that is easy to choose because it has the self-interests if both sides in mind. The positions of these couples and or the other side of this conflict do not and should not have any importance in solving this conflict. It is not uncommon to say that over half of Americans do not agree with same-sex unions (Goldberg-Hiller 25). Using objective criteria is the only way to solve this problem. It is important to understand that the relationship easily becomes entangled with the conflict (Fisher, Ury, and Patton 20). Same-sex partners need to use these tools to create options to make a solution that will appeal to both sides.
