Persuasive Essay : Should the legal drinking at be raised to age 21? If a nineteen year old has the ability to help choose who runs our country, why not also allow them to drink alcohol? The drinking age should not be raised to age twenty-one. There are many important reasons that should be considered first. Some main reasons are you are legally an adult at age eighteen, a loss of money to the government and to have more control over young people when they consume alcohol. So, if the drinking age were raised to twenty-one there would be problems that would arise with the nineteen and twenty year olds. Keeping the drinking age at nineteen, allows more young adults to drink in controlled environments such as taverns, pubs, restaurants and school functions. Therefore, the drinking age should not be raised to age twenty because it is better in the long run for youth to learn about drinking at a younger age. Since they are considered old enough to handle these responsibilities why not let them choose whether or not to consume alcohol. If the drinking age was increased to age twenty-one the government would loose money. There would also be an increase in the use of fake identification. Having had experiences with alcohol for two years now has been beneficial to me because I have become more responsible at a younger age. But, when some US states raised the drinking age from nineteen to twenty-one they found that there was no reduction in alcohol consumption and alcohol related problems increased greatly. The government would loose money because young people from the United States would no longer come to Canada to buy alcohol or go to the bars and pubs. During prohibition in the 1920's there was a backlash towards the laws, which caused other social problems. Some people might believe that there would less young people drinking alcohol if they raised the drink age to twenty-one. In addition, the police would have to give out more drinking fines, which would cost the taxpayers more. So, there are fewer problems in the future. They are allowed to choose whether or not to attend school and whether or not to smoke.
