How Successful Have Revolutions proved as Ways of Changing t

Revolutions as a catalyst for change are always going to be 'world changing' events. By their nature a revolution pertains to either the overthrow of an existing political system or a dramatic change in ideas or practice. Yet one must consider the wider world in context. Whilst in all cases the revolution will change the immediate area, which may be considered by the local populace their 'world', in a wider context the actual impact of the revolutions may not have such an impact, or as in most cases that will be set out in this essay the revolutions will be set as a part of a larger set of circumstances. Revolutions are never isolated incidents, but a reaction to events viewed by a section of the populace, which they view to be unjust or wrong. The degree of success in changing the world is exceedingly difficult to ratify. In some systems such as Marxist Communism, the fruits of revolution may yet bloom from the failures of the democracy we are now living in. Thus the impact of the 1917 Russian Revolution may still be considered to be carrying on to this day within China, Cuba and North Korea, and these nations, especially in the Far East may yet change the world in the name of the Communist ideals they follow. Ev

The extreme nature of these two opposing forms of government, to a 'normal' democratic approach as seen by the major Western powers, compounds their success and turns the issue into a true struggle. Such blurred boundaries will be explored later when looking at the revolutions of 1848. Yet without the legitimacy of the peoples support, the revolution can seem dubious to those on the outside. The fact that the majority of Europe came under the French shroud formed massive Nationalist sentiments which in turn influenced many of the Revolutions of 1848, yet this link can not fully go to justify the French Revolution as a major contributing factor to these revolutions. Whilst the sheer number of Revolutions across Europe in 1848 is alarming in itself, none of the Revolutions were world changing. Mostly they were concerned with local matters such as the Viennese tobacco riot's, and the Palermo Revolts, and as such their effect was limited to the locality they were in. If the movement achieves it's goals then one can say it is a success, yet the means can be dubious which can limit the perception of success by outsiders. Whilst Marxist thinking would deem this a 'true' revolution, in reality the lack of organisation especially in a world before modern communications technology prevents such action really taking place. Firstly constitutional monarchies had replaced absolute monarchies in most of the Napoleonic territories. The French revolution was a major influence across the world as it concerned the people trying to break free of the feudal oppression their monarch imposed upon them. They were the last 'popular' revolutions. The revolutions of1848 all emanated from unrest within France, which in turn was a direct result of the 1789 revolution and the tensions and ideas it had instilled into the hearts of the European peoples. The success derives from the political ideology and ability of the leaders of the Revolution to convey their message to an international audience. In general however there is a great deal of evidence to suggest that Revolutions often result in world changing consequences, especially for the local populations of the countries in question. Where such ideas cross from one revolutionary movement one has to decide whether the secondary reaction was individual in it's own right or a direct consequence of the earlier revolution.
